About Moodsonic & Soundscaping
What is Moodsonic?
Moodsonic delivers the AV industry's first fully integrated soundscaping platform for commercial spaces. The system dynamically responds to contextual inputs including noise levels, occupancy, and user control to create environments that support wellbeing, focus, and comfort.
Unlike background music, Moodsonic generates biophilic soundscapes that never loop, continuously shaping spaces that feel calm, comfortable, and easy to work or recover in.
What is soundscaping?
Soundscaping is the intentional design and delivery of sound within a space to support specific outcomes—such as focus, relaxation, or comfort. Rather than masking noise with white noise or playing looped background music, soundscaping uses carefully crafted, continuously evolving audio compositions to shape how people experience a room.
Moodsonic's soundscapes are biophilic (inspired by nature), generative (never looping), and adaptive (responding to the environment in real time).
How is Moodsonic different from background music?
Background Music
- Content: Licensed tracks, playlists
- Repetition: Loops frequently
- Responsiveness: Static
- Purpose: Ambience, entertainment
- Licensing: Music licensing required
Moodsonic Soundscaping
- Content: Biophilic, generative compositions
- Repetition: Never loops
- Responsiveness: Adapts to noise, time of day, occupancy
- Purpose: Wellbeing, focus, acoustic comfort
- Licensing: Commercial usage rights included
How is Moodsonic different from sound masking?
Sound masking uses broadband noise (often described as "pink noise" or "white noise") to reduce the intelligibility of speech and create acoustic privacy. While effective for privacy, masking systems are not designed to improve the quality of the acoustic experience.
Moodsonic creates immersive, calming environments through layered soundscapes that adapt in real time. The system can provide both masking benefits and an enriched acoustic experience—transforming sound from a background utility into a building amenity.
Is there research behind soundscaping?
Yes. The benefits of biophilic sound and carefully designed acoustic environments are supported by peer-reviewed research in environmental psychology, workplace productivity, healthcare recovery, and education. Moodsonic's approach draws on this body of research to create soundscapes that measurably support wellbeing and performance.
We work with academic partners and industry bodies to validate outcomes in real deployments.
How It Works
How does the Moodsonic system work?
The Moodsonic platform consists of three main components:
- Edge Devices (Hardware): Moodsonic-powered devices installed in your space run on-device engines that generate and play soundscapes locally through connected speakers. Built-in sensors monitor the acoustic environment.
- Cloud Platform: Centralized services manage configuration, scheduling, analytics, and coordination across all devices and sites.
- Web Applications: Design, control, author, and analyze your soundscaping system through intuitive web interfaces.
Why does Moodsonic generate sound locally instead of streaming?
Moodsonic's Soundscaping Engine runs directly on the devices in your space—not in the cloud. This architecture provides critical advantages:
Reliability: Soundscapes continue playing even if your internet connection drops or experiences latency. There's no buffering, no interruptions, and no dependence on external streaming services.
Performance: Local generation means zero latency between sensor inputs and soundscape response. The system reacts to your environment in real time.
Independence: Each device operates autonomously, ensuring consistent performance across your deployment regardless of network conditions.
How does Moodsonic protect privacy?
Moodsonic is designed with privacy at its core:
- Local sensor processing: Sound level and activity data is processed on-device. Raw audio is never transmitted to the cloud.
- Privacy-focused metadata: Only anonymized, aggregated metrics (like noise levels and activity patterns) are sent to the platform for analytics—never recordings.
- No audio streaming: Soundscapes are generated locally, not streamed from external sources.
- On-premise options: For organizations with strict data policies, deployment options can be tailored to meet compliance requirements.
This approach means Moodsonic can provide intelligent, sensor-responsive soundscaping without the privacy concerns associated with cloud-based audio processing.
What inputs does the system respond to?
Moodsonic adapts in real time based on:
- Ambient noise levels: Soundscape volume and content adjust as background noise changes
- Time of day: Circadian themes shift the soundscape character throughout the day
- Seasonal themes: Optional seasonal variations in soundscape content
- User control: Volume, theme selection, and scheduling via the Control app
- Occupancy patterns (Advanced tiers): More sophisticated adaptivity based on space usage
What makes the soundscapes "generative"?
Moodsonic soundscapes are composed of multiple audio layers—ambient beds, natural textures, harmonic elements—that are combined and varied algorithmically in real time by the on-device Soundscaping Engine. No two moments sound exactly alike.
This is fundamentally different from streaming or playing audio files:
- Soundscapes are created as dynamic systems in Author, defining how elements should behave
- The Soundscaping Engine interprets these systems locally, generating unique audio moment-to-moment
- Element characteristics like density, timing, and probability are varied continuously
- The result is a sense of organic, living presence that eliminates the listener fatigue associated with looped audio
Can I hear what it sounds like before installing?
Yes. We offer:
- Online demo experience: Preview soundscapes remotely with demo accounts and remote demonstrations from Moodsonic
- Showroom visits: Experience Moodsonic in person at our global partner showrooms
- Pilot programs: Deploy Moodsonic in a limited area before full rollout
Products – Software
What software applications are included?
The Moodsonic platform includes:
- Moodsonic Soundscaping Engine: The on-device engine that generates and plays soundscapes locally. It interprets soundscape compositions, responds to real-time sensor data, and ensures soundscapes adapt dynamically to your environment—even without an internet connection.
- Moodsonic Control: Dashboard for end users to browse soundscapes, preview themes, adjust volume, change adaptive settings, and schedule soundscapes across zones.
- Moodsonic Insights: Analytics platform providing acoustic metrics, activity analysis, historical trends, and AI-generated insights to understand how your space sounds and performs.
- Moodsonic Design: Used to create system specifications, upload floor plans, design zones, and generate equipment lists. A public Design & Estimate tool is available on the website for preliminary designs; detailed specifications are created internally for approved quotes.
- Moodsonic Author: The composition tool used internally to create Moodsonic's soundscape library. While end users don't interact with Author directly, it's the foundation of what makes Moodsonic's soundscapes unique.
What is the Soundscaping Engine?
The Soundscaping Engine is the core software that runs on Moodsonic devices, bringing soundscapes to life in your environment. Key capabilities include:
- Generative playback: Plays soundscapes as layered, generative systems rather than fixed audio files, ensuring environments feel natural and continuously evolving
- Real-time adaptation: Adjusts soundscapes based on time of day, noise levels, occupancy, and other contextual inputs—not just volume, but density, energy, and character
- Local intelligence: Runs entirely on-device, ensuring uninterrupted operation regardless of network conditions
- Zonal coordination: Receives zone assignments, schedules, and automation settings from the Control application
What is Moodsonic Author?
Author is Moodsonic's internal composition tool—purpose-built for creating soundscapes designed to work in buildings.
Unlike traditional audio production, Author creates soundscapes as dynamic systems, not static recordings:
- Layered building blocks: Soundscapes are constructed from many small sound elements (individual bird calls, water textures, subtle environmental sounds) that remain dynamic and variable
- Adjustable characteristics: Each element has parameters like gain, density, probability, and timing that the Soundscaping Engine interprets in real time
- Contextual design: Soundscapes are authored to evolve across the day, respond to environmental conditions, and adapt to different space types
- Sensor-responsive behaviors: Author defines how soundscapes should respond to inputs like noise levels or occupancy
This approach is why Moodsonic's soundscapes never loop and can adapt intelligently to changing conditions—they're designed from the ground up as living systems, not recordings.
While you won't use Author yourself, the soundscapes you experience through the Control app are the result of this specialized composition process.
